Both copper and aluminium are used as conductors in electrical cables. Each has strengths, and the right choice depends on where the cable will be used.
Quick comparison
| Copper | Aluminium | |
|---|---|---|
| Conductivity | Higher | About 60% of copper |
| Size needed for same current | Smaller | Larger (roughly one size bigger) |
| Weight | Heavier | Much lighter |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Joints & terminals | Easy and reliable | Need proper lugs and care |
When to choose copper
For house wiring, switches, sockets and appliances, copper is the preferred choice. It is flexible, makes reliable connections in small terminals and carries more current for its size. See Kanak copper house wires and multi-core round cables.
When aluminium makes sense
For service connections (pole to meter), long power distribution runs and farms, aluminium is lighter and more economical. Just make sure the size is chosen for aluminium, not copper, and use suitable lugs at the joints. See Kanak aluminium flat & round cables.
