What Does the ISI Mark (IS:694) on Wires Mean?

When you buy wires for your home, the ISI mark is the first thing to look for. It means the product is certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and is made to the relevant Indian Standard.

What is IS:694?

IS:694 is the Indian Standard for PVC insulated cables for working voltages up to and including 1100 V. It sets rules for things like conductor quality, insulation thickness and the tests the cable must pass. House wires and many flexible cables are made to this standard.

What to look for on the pack

  • The ISI mark with the standard number IS:694.
  • A CM/L licence number printed under the ISI mark.
  • The manufacturer name, size (sq mm) and length clearly printed.

How to check if it is genuine

You can verify the CM/L licence number using the official BIS Care app. Enter the number and it shows the licence holder and the product it covers. If the details do not match the pack, do not buy it.

Why it matters

Low-quality wires often have less copper than marked and thin insulation. They heat up, trip the MCB, and can cause fires. ISI marked wire gives you peace of mind that the basics are right.

All Kanak house wires are ISI marked as per IS:694 and made by an ISO 9001:2015 certified company.
