A submersible pump is only as reliable as the cable that powers it. The wrong cable can cause voltage drop, motor heating and early pump failure. Here is what you should know before buying a submersible flat cable.
Three things decide the cable size
- Pump power (HP) — bigger motors draw more current and need thicker cores.
- Supply voltage — single phase or three phase.
- Total cable length — borewell depth plus the distance to the starter panel. Longer runs need a bigger size to keep voltage drop low.
Why a flat cable?
Flat 3-core cables are slim, so they fit easily alongside the pipe in narrow borewells, and they are easy to tie to the delivery pipe.
Installation tips
- Use a proper waterproof joint kit for the cable-to-motor joint.
- Tie the cable to the pipe every few metres so its weight does not hang on the joint.
- Keep some extra length at the top for future maintenance.
- Do not use house wire or ordinary flexible wire inside a borewell.
